From the name, many people think Tokio Hotel (TH) comes from Tokyo. But in fact, the band consisting of the twins, Bill Kaulitz (vocals, 21) and Tom Kaulitz (guitarist, 21), and Georg Listing (bassist, 23), also Gustav Schafer (drummer, 22) is from Germany.
The four teens met in Magdeburg Club, one of the clubs in their cities. At that time, Georg and Gustav who knew each other, watched Bill and Tom's performance on stage. Stunned by the twins' ability to play music, Georg and Gustav then invited them to make a band.
Devilish (their original band name) started their career with small gigs/concerts in Germany. By then, Bill (then age 13), was found by Peter Hoffman, a music producer, at a talent show (2003).
Their band name changed to Tokio Hotel. Tokio is the German name for Tokyo (also one of the city that they like), while the Hotel was used because they spend more time in hotels while on tour. With this new name, Peter changed the flow of their music into pop-rock.
Most of the songs on their first album, Schrei (2005), also created by Peter. The four teens are very lucky because almost all the songs on the album sold in the market and the master of the charts in several countries in Europe. Songs such as Durch den Monsoon (Through The Monsoon), Schrei (Scream), Rette Mich (Rescue Me), Der Letzte Tag (The Final Day), also includes Unendlichkeit, a song TH wrote alone.
The first award they received was Best Newcomer and Super Comet at Comet Awards (Germany). Since then, other awards followed one by one, such as Best Newcomer at the Eins Live Krone (Germany Radio Awards), Best Pop National Act for the Bambi Awards (Germany), and Best Single, Best Pop, and Rock Band 2005 at the Golden Penguin (Austria). The following year, they added to their success by pocketing another 19 awards in several countries in Europe.
This makes them optimistic to release the next album, which is Zimmer 483 (Room 483 - February 2007) and Scream (June 2007). Scream is their first album in English. The three singles on this album (Through The Monsoon-Durch den Monsoon, Ready Set Go-Übers Ende der Welt, and Don't Jump-Spring nicht) are very popular in England. No wonder the album sales had jumped to 1.5 million copies and made them the Best Interact at the MTV Europe Music Awards (2007). This adds to their collection of awards in 2007 to 20 awards.
As if they wanted to recreate their success in the UK, they repackage the TH album for the United States (U.S) with the same single titled album, Tokio Hotel. Sure enough, they quickly become the talk of the country. After the second single, Scream America was released in the U.S. , they were awarded at the American MTV Music Award as Best New Artist (2008). During their 3-year career, they received in total 73 awards.
However, while doing a concert in Marseille, France (14 March), Bill experienced a problem in his vocal cords. Two days later, he was forced to cancel tours in Lisbon, Spain because he was no longer able to sing. After undergoing an examination, it turned out Bill had larynx cyst. Surgical removal of the cyst had to be done and inevitably, the tour was canceled temporarily.
After surgery, he could not speak for 12 days and he also had to undergo vocal rehabilitation for four weeks. TH resume their tour in May 2008, which later ended on July 13, 2008 in Werchter, Belgium.
August 2008, TH went on their second tour in North America. Simultaneously, they also released a new album, Humanoid (2009), which was released in two countries with two languages, German and English (single called Automatisch - Automatic and Lass uns Laufen - World Behind My Wall).
Now, where else in Europe is TH not known? TH's name has been mentioned hundreds of times as the nominees in all the music awards in Europe. Up until 1st September 2010, TH has pocketed approximately 90 awards. The most recent award they received was at the Rockbjörnen Award (Sweden) for the category of Concert of The Year.
Bill The Fashionista
Just imagine, about 40 cm long hair styled like a Mohawk? Well, Bill did it on his hair. Bill also enjoys wearing accessories like a big silver necklace, leather gloves, and black nail polish. Oh yes, makeup is always embedded on his face that was done himself. He says, "It usually takes me about an hour to get ready for a show. So fashionable he is, Bill recently was asked to walk the runway at a fashion show at Milan Fashion Week.
Bill began to make changes in himself at the age of 12 years. At that age, he was wearing eye liner on the eye and painting his nails with black nail polish. "At first I was inspired by David Bowie," said the man who's figure is already immortalized in Madame Tussauds wax museum.
Bill's style is very contrary to her twin brother, Tom. Tom's dressing is more like the style of a rapper. But, although it may be strange to see a man wearing full makeup on his face, women around the world are still crazy for him.
