SCAN: Batterie Nº 71/10 (France)

The cult group of teenagers Humanoid returns with his fourth album. Batterie magazine examined the phenomenon Tokio Hotel along with drummer Gustav, between racks in the Bercy Palais Omnisport in.

After the Scorpions and Rammstein, the most impressive rock phenomenon that has come from Germany, Tokio Hotel. With efficient and melodious pop songs of this band of young people (making them since the release of their debut album Schrei in the youngest with an average age of 15 years) they address issues such as love, death, suicide, divorce and even life after death, they have a great impact among adolescents. It's simple, enrollment in German language classes in French schools has doubled since the emergence of the group. Tokio Hotel, there is also a completely unexpected way, created by vocalist Bill Kaulitz, whose hair flaming hair would make Robert Smith (The Cure) look like a simple brush, indeed, he himself admits using unusual things. Furthermore, when we prepared to do an interview with the drummer for the band young, we skipped some questions. Will we run into a good drummer? Yes, be sure that - Gustav is a great drummer, and thanks to the skillful wrist, the phenomenon of Tokio Hotel, you can enjoy without problems.

Batterie: You've lived on the stage in recent years. Do you feel you have progressed to play both live?
Gustav: Honestly, I think so, at least I hope so. According to my coach (which deals with the drums and sound), I have made much progress. He knows what he's saying, since he sees and hears me play every night. And actually, I'd rather just ask him, because I'm very demanding with myself, and I do not like to boast.

Batteries: Do you feel frustrated that many people consider you wrong, you ignoring talent as a musician?
Gustav: You know, I think there is also a good group of people who rely on our musical abilities. I hate to seem pretentious, but I started drum lessons at age four, and today I am in a very good level. And why not say so? Prefer not to have people thinking that I am not good.

Batterie: Incidentally, why did you choose the drums?
Gustav: I've always been attracted by the drums. I think the ideal instrument for me, I was a bad boy, a frustrated. Finally, I discovered the beauty of the instrument which is in contrast. You can hit it with all your strength, or do not, touch her gently. Yes, I admit that I too would like to try the guitar, which is also good, but after an hour I give up too soon (laughs)

Batterie: Do you have musicians in your family?
Gustav: None! My father had a guitar and used to touch the start of Smoke on The Water, but the poor do not know better. I am the only musician in the house.

Batterie: Learn to play alone?
Gustav: Actually, I had some lessons in music school, but I always liked to learn some tricks while playing. But I would stress that I learned some tricks with my teachers, but we had the basic theory and rhythm is not very exciting when you're young.

Batterie: We know that Lars Ulrich is one of your idols. Have you had the opportunity to be with him?
Gustav: Yes, I met Lars in Germany during the Metallica tour and I was very elated. It was crazy to know this guy who was responsible for many of my dreams. I love the style of Lars. It is an excellent starting point and produces an enormous amount of energy when he plays. I especially like the heavier songs like Metallica: Enter Sandman and Sad But True. Currently, I always feel great when I play one of those songs sound flooded.

Batterie: Would you like to play a more aggressive than that of Tokio Hotel?
Gustav Within a few years, why not! But I feel full as the drummer for Tokio Hotel. I put all my love and all we have in our music, and I identify 100% with our songs.

Batterie: Apart from Lars, that other drummers do you admire?
Gustav: I think Danny Carey of Tool is ... like say ... is so talented that there are no words to describe his style. Further, Jerry Gaskill, the drummer for King's X's fantastic ... I recommend it.

Batterie: In the Humanoid Tour, your equipment is installed on a platform. How do you feel up there?
Gustav: I am very dominant, and I love it! (Laughter). But seriously, the beginning was a little shaky. When we began testing the platform, the hydraulic cylinder was activated, and I had the feeling of playing in an elevator. Took me a while to adjust, but now I enjoy very much.

Batterie: Do not you feel isolated from others?
Gustav: No, and I admit, I like being on stage and stay in my little world. And others are jealous because I can do that. I can hit very hard on the drums, and no one comes to bother me. They also complain because I can always sit, they have to stand all the while the duration of the concert and have to walk back and forth. Perhaps unaware of the reason why I have to sit down (laughs).

Batterie: What set of Meinl use now?
Gustav: All my dishes are now within the range or MB20. I have a "charley 15" and three crashes (18 ", 19" to 20 ")...
