INTERVIEW/VIDEO: Bill & Tom sitting under the tree

Tokio Hotel: Also Bill and Tom are sitting under the Christmas Tree with their family
HAMBURG A peaceful Christmas, that’s what the Band Tokio Hotel has been looking forward to this year. Because the time before Christmas has been very stressful: Bill, Tom, Georg and Gustav are stuck in the preparations for their “Welcome to Humanoid City”-Tour. Nevertheless the Band took some time to talk about music, their life as celebrities and christmas with Susanne Linnenkamp.

You’re already rehearsing for the Tour?
Tom: Yes, we’re preparing for the Tour. This will be one of the most elaborate Tokio-Hotel-Shows. This means, that we go through intense tour preparations – as a band we rehearse in Hamburg and then later with the whole Crew in London.

You promised the Fans one of the best and most spectacular Tokio-Hotel-Shows ever…
Gustav: Yes, the stage will be amazing.
Bill: It’s a brand new and sensational stage – a little spacy and huge. There are six to seven meter wide constructions. A lot of things will happen: We’re working with Pyro and with some moving elements. The Tour is called “Welcome to Humanoid City”-Tour and we will really build-up our own Humanoid City, in every city we play in.

You also promised to play a lot of new songs. But it seems like your German fans don’t even want to hear them. You got kicked off of the Top of the charts pretty fast…
Bill: That’s a false conclusion. We always have a run on the charts in the first few days. What other artists sell in a longer period of time, we sell in the first few days. That means, our Album gets kicked off of the top very fast, because everyone already bought it. Humanoid is, so far, the most successful Tokio-Hotel-Album.

Critics are accusing you of neglecting your German fans lately…
Tom: This accusation is understandable – because our career started in Germany, and we were on the road with our first Album there. And now we have to travel to 100 different countries. We try to keep it balanced.

Your music sounds more mature, do you want to get away from the pure-teen clientele?
Georg: We took our time with the new Album. Before that, we were always on the road, and played an unbelievable amount of tours. And then we spent a year in the studio, to see, which kind of music we want make. It wasn’t a decision to sound more mature. It was a natural developement.

Tom: You make the music, you feel like at the moment and the people who feel like this too, hear this. Whether they’re older or younger – to be honest – we don’t give a shit about that.

At the last tour, in Dortmund, you had some trouble with the authorities, because Teens camped out in front of the venue for weeks. What can you do to avoid this in future?
Bill: I don’t even want to avoid this. For us as a band it’s great that the fans are waiting so long to see us.

With your new Tour you’ll be in the region of Oberhausen again. Why?
Tom: Because we have a lot of great fans there. 30 cities in nearly two months, a strenuous program …
Georg: … you could say that, yes…

…and you Bill, you’re getting thinner and thinner. The fans are worried, and asking themselves if you can get through the tour.
Bill: Sure, such a tour is exhausting, but I wouldn’t do it if I didn’t believe that I could get through it.

How do you prepare for the tour physically: With relaxing or fitness training?
Bill: I prefer relaxing. But since I don’t have a lot of time to do this, I want to make some sports, to be in shape for a show on this huge stage. We’ll be taking a small gym on tour with us.

Allegedly you’re not going shopping on your own anymore…
Bill: Yes, that’s right. I’m thankful for the life I’m living now, but there are also bad sides to it. As Bill Kaulitz, you don’t have a private life anymore. That’s just how it is.

Who buys things for you?
Bill: Personal Assistants.

Christmas Shopping?
Bill: Also our assistants. Or I order something from the internet.

How will you spend christmas?
Tom: Traditional – We’ll be sitting under the christmas tree with our family.

And you’ll sing „Silent Night, Holy Night“?
Bill: Absolutely not…
Gustav: …if we do so, then the rock Version…
Bill: …nope, absolutely not. I don’t like to sing christmas songs. I always hated it, it’s too uncreative for me

Distinctive signs: Ten piercings - one on the right eyebrow ( 12), one on his tongue (14), one on his left nipple, three on his left ear, one on his right ear (20), a septum piercing (20) and snakebites (21/22). Four tattoos - one of the band logo on the back of his neck (15), a star on his right hip (since he was almost 17). To celebrate his 18th birthday, he got a tattoo on his left inner forearm which reads Freiheit 89 (Freedom 89) which celebrates the year he was born and the fact that he is now, at 18, an adult. Q&A with Tom Kaulitz

What would somebody have to give to you, so that you wear Bill’s clothes once?
Well, I can imagine something with Angelina Jolie. No, nonsense. I would never wear Bill’s clothes, and to be honest, I don’t think anyone would like to see me like that.

If you’d have a girlfriend, would you hide that from the press, or would you admit it openly?
But I always talk about my girlfriends. I have one or two now and then. But it doesn't really last longer than one day.

Do your friends and family have nothing to say about you talking about sex all the time, and about the fact that you’re sleeping with groupies?
Why should they? Other parents would like for their children to talk about it. And this way I don’t have to lie.

How can someone provoke you? What gets on your nerves most?
I’m not that easy to provoke. I think that there’s only one person who can really do that. This person is 10 minutes younger than me, and his name starts with B. I can’t say how he sees this.

How many guitars do you have? Do you name them?
I don’t really know how many there are… I think there are about 20 and I don’t give them names. But Georg calls his base “Mr. Sandberg”. It’s his only friend anyway. (He’s crazy)

You said that you and Bill often have the same dreams. Which was the most embarrassing/beautiful/strange dream you ever had?
I think this is the first question I don’t really have an answer for. And that’s because I always forget about what I dream.

What was the most sordid lie you’ve ever invented?
I never lie! I hope everyone knows that!

Do you like to remember about school, about school trips and so on? If so you, what did you especially liked then?
There was only one school trip I went to. I pretended to be sick for the others. I don’t really like to remember about school. I hated it! School trips were a change to the awful everyday school-life. You could have many girlfriends there, that’s the only positive thing I can remember.

Do you have any habits (do you speak while sleeping for example)?
Maybe I do speak while sleeping. I can’t really tell… You should ask the others about it. Otherwise I like leaving things behind in different places, and things which remain there for good.

Is there still a dream you would like to come true or are you perfectly happy?
I’m really happy…Whenever I express some dreams they probably sound stupid, but I wish to be as successful as now for as long as possible, and to see as many countries as possible together with my boys.

What goes to your mind during concerts when you make such grimaces?
Grimaces? I think that, if you play music and you are in your element, you don’t have your face expressions under control. You don’t think of anything… You just play!

Personality: Georg and Tom are more alike when it comes to hitting on girls. He also enjoys showing his body off when on stage and usually strips his shirt off. Georg gets teased a lot by the twins due to his clumsiness. He also likes sleeping naked. He currently has a girlfriend whom he's been with since 2009.

Personal Quotes

On how he would create a romantic date: I would just try to be who I am and not put on any fancy cloths to impress the girl. I mean obviously I am very happy if a girl dresses up for me but I also don’t want her to pretend to be someone she’s not.

To create a romantic mood, I would take her out to a beautiful restaurant. Well, now that I think about it, I would probably prepare a meal myself - that’s more intimate. It might taste better in a restaurant but my pasta is definitely also worth a try!

He’s always the first one to get up in the mornings and waits till the rest of the band drag themselves out of bed while he’s already made breakfast and gotten ready. When you first get to know him - you realize that he is such a sweet heart!

Type of girl: The one who will love him the way he is. He currently has a girlfriend since 2010. In early 2015, it was announced that Gustav is married.
